Panel Discussion:
Re-balancing China’s Economy – Challenges, Opportunities and Implications

China is changing rapidly as its economy transitions from an export-and investment-led growth model to a consumption-based growth model. This panel will consider the structural challenges and implications of this transition. It will consider key issues, such as the extent to which China can realise its current re-balancing goals, what market and institutional reforms are needed to support them, and whether China’s policy shift is compatible with continued high growth.

Panellists will also discuss the dilemmas of boosting domestic consumption over other sectors, what lessons China might learn from economies that have made similar transitions and the likely impact of China’s new economic emphasis on Asia and the rest of the world.

Prof Xiao Geng
Director of Research and Senior Fellow, Fung Global Institute
