Nicholas Stern, a member of the Institute’s Academic Board, is the IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government at the London School of Economics and Political Science; Chairman of the LSE’s Asia Research Center; Director of the India Observatory, and Chairman of the LSE’s Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and Environment.

From 2003 to 2007, Lord Stern held numerous roles as a senior civil servant for the UK Government, including leading the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change. He was Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President at the World Bank from 2000 to 2003, and, previously, Chief Economist and Special Counsellor to the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, from 1994 to 1999.

Lord Stern holds a BA in mathematics from University of Cambridge and a DPhil in economics from Oxford University. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy and is a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was made a Knight Bachelor in 2004 for services to economics, and a life peer in 2007.
